"I can see you!"

On May 17, I was working at my computer, and started hearing some little scratching noise coming from the far corner. I was thinking it was a mouse which I was going to be bothered by having to do something about it! Long story shorter, I finally found this potato bug inbetween some of my big sheets of scrapbooking papers. I gathered him up and was about to toss him out the window, when the thought came to me that since I was working on Smug Mug, he would be a great DP, for either that night, or save him for a night when I needed a shot to upload.
I set him on my desk and right beyond him was this pair of eyes staring at him. I moved the eyes a touch closer for better comp!

There is a story that goes along with these beautiful eyes! I'll save that for another DP!

P.S. I learned from this little photo session that these little creatures 'play dead'! Except for the little windshield wiper type thing by his eye, on the right side....those still move as he's imitating a dead bug!

Today, I was helping to clear out and clean up my Dad's house.
We were almost ready to leave for the night, when the thought of
my DP entered my otherwise filled mind! I looked around for a while for some interesting subject matter and finally decided upon this scene. (I moved nothing; this is as it was!)

This really was a cooperative effort; a SmugMug buddy of mine happens to live next door and was visiting when I began my search for something to photograph! He came up with the idea to shine a flashlight above her praying hands!
Great idea, Al ! Was fun working with you!
Check out Al's site; in particular, he does great action shots!

One of the best ways to find relief when it's 110 in the shade---run through the sprinklers!!!
It certainly made me happy; but the Glad was still sad :(

KurtPreston: come on, buddy! You can do it! (Run through the sprinklers if you want...but I'm talkin' about an SP!!!)

Pensively Posed Poultry Portrait

OK! This 'portrait' was not taken today; but HAD to be posted today for Hillary!!!! (Got the Tiara in this shot, my dear!) And, of course, the 'bling' for LauraJohnson!!!

Here's my story, and I'm stickin' to it: (it's long, but worth it, for your entertainment value!)
My favorite photo service which I offer is 'Pet Photography'! A couple of years ago, a referral led me to a woman, here within our county, that raises poultry! She ended up offering the suggestion that I create a portable portrait studio and take it to 'chicken shows'!!! While laughing, I asked if she was serious! "Chicken Shows!!?? There really is such a thing!?"
OH....little did I know!
So, after giving this some thought, I talked a girlfriend into being a partner and 'giving this idea a go'!

This particular girlfriend and I are quite handy; like fixing things, building things....and really like power tools! (Turns out, we each also have an affinity for poultry!) We stood in front of her garage on a Sunday morning, with coffee in hand, looking at each other asking "Well, how do you suppose one builds a 'portable portrait studio for poultry'!?!?" "I don't know; do you know?!"
By the end of the day, and a trip to the hardware store and Wal-Mart (for fabric as backdrops), we patted ourselves on the back and agreed that it was a very creative job well done!
From that moment on, this has been a never-ending source of jokes, and laughter!! Most especially from our friends and family!
That Sunday night at dinner, this girlfriend (and her kids) joined my husband, my daughter and I for dinner. My daughter asked what the project was we were working on when she called that afternoon. When my husband overheard the answer (I had not yet told him!), he says "Wait! Wait! Now let me get this straight! You girls built a 'portrait studio' thinking people are going to bring to you their chickens so you can take pictures of them!!!???" "Oh, no, Honey! We're going to them!"
OMG!! The look on his face was priceless!!! He knew we had finally 'lost it'!!

I then had to start researching the 'Poultry Show' schedule for the upcoming show season! ( The Show season is 6 months out of a year; the other six months, these same people are breeding, hatching and raising the next 'Show Stars'!! Definitely a sub-culture, much the same as Dog Shows, Cat Shows, Horse Shows, etc.!) We signed up to be at our first show, mid-way through a season, walked in to start setting up, and began laughing wondering what we had gotten ourselves into!! For instance, our set-up is in a BIG room, with LONG rows of tables on which cages are set (there's one bird per cage); there's approx. 900-1300 birds registered for an average show........ALL of which are talking at the same time inside that one room!! All kinds of poultry, not just chickens! While at the very first show, my daughter called and I happened to not only hear my cell phone, but was not busy at the time. When I answered it, she hesitated, then spoke a touch louder as she asked "Mom? Where the heck are you!?!?" She could barely hear me because of all the talking poultry in the background! Also, at that first show, my friend and I began to really wonder "Do you think these people ever eat...chicken?!" We decided not to ever ask!

We have SOOO much fun doing this! We laugh much, really enjoy the people, and love all the gorgeous poultry! Wonderful and very entertaining way to earn some extra income!!
And we didn't leave well-enough-alone! This last season we added a new little touch to the whole idea: took a box of props with us and (without asking the owners) started taking some of the shots after 'dressing them up' or setting props next to them! Talk about laughter!! We end up with a semi-circle of laughing people, standing back around me as I'm taking the photos! (My friend sits at a table doing the computer work on our laptop!)
And BTW: since you're wondering (!), these are 'Show' birds - - THEY POSE, whether they're dressed up or not! Swear to goodness, they do! Especially the Roosters! I now understand the word "Cocky"!

Prestigious, preposterous and provacative pet portrait of pretty, perspicacious pooch;
pensively and positively pondering this pose after proudly putting on her perfect pearls,
while presumably prospering pretentiously with potent presence.

Choosing the DP for today was very difficult! Check out another choice in my Contender gallery

Day 3 - The Glad Hummer

I need to use a quote from Shelly, which she offered to dedman yesterday:
"Sometimes God sends us little gifts like this, and it creates such joy you just HAVE to share it!!"
**********************************************************************************
As a practice session for camera settings, I decided to continue on with my study in the life of a Gladiola stalk.
(LOL!! Kre8ive: now I can't make that reference without thinking about and envisioning your comment from yesterday:
"this gorgeous flower stalking a bunny that had tried to eat it at some point!" !!!).
This session was 21 hours after the shot from yesterday, and was being dedicated to bilroy!
I liked the idea of causing an 'other than black' BG. I was about to call it quits (it was a little hot out there!),
when this wonderful hummingbird arrived to show me how much they like Gladiolas!! (Thank you, Mom! I love you!)
******************************************************************************

BTW: Thanks, bilroy! I included two more shots for you in my Contender gallery.

And Thank you all very much for the wonderful and generous comments and encouragement!! This 'community' is just really outstanding!!
LadyKatesPhotography > July 6

It's still 4th of July weekend!!

My husband and I enjoyed a very peaceful and quiet 4th by staying home! I was watching the dusk light as it played across the flags which our neighbors had put on their front fence. (Thanks, chuck and Lisa!) This is Coconut, one of their three Great Pyranees!! I was coaxing her into standing right by the bunting. She is so gorgeous--look at those eyes!! She's also a real sweetie!

I am so grateful that we're able to celebrate the Independence of our great country! Hopefully our independence causes all Americans some happiness!

My attempts at getting a good shot of a Hummingbird haven't proved sharp enough....yet!
I've also found that I begin to run out of patience waiting for them to come back!!
So, I decided a little PS practice would be fun!

I included another shot, and PS practice, in my Contender Gallery
