Last night I noticed a recent DP which MyKey posted:
(http://mykey.smugmug.com/popular/4/450188587_rtkyk#450188587_rtkyk) re: the plans we're making for our upcoming "Great Rock-Hunting Expedition"!

I took this photo, of 'MyKey-the photographer-taking a photo', during our trip last March; we had just experienced sunrise in Spangler Hills. This shot is perfectly illustrating a decision which we recently arrived upon re: our adventure for this year.
We are not taking a U-Haul this time; we're going to bring home photos instead of (so many!) rocks!!

We're REALLY looking forward to the experience!

*****Maybe we should request that MyKey post whatever shot she was capturing here, while prone in the desert sand!?!?*****
LadyKatesPhotography > Precious and provocative portrait; a pleasing pose of the plump poultry in the position of princess!!! PRICELESS!!! ;-)

Pensively Posed Poultry Portrait

OK! This 'portrait' was not taken today; but HAD to be posted today for Hillary!!!! (Got the Tiara in this shot, my dear!) And, of course, the 'bling' for LauraJohnson!!!

Here's my story, and I'm stickin' to it: (it's long, but worth it, for your entertainment value!)
My favorite photo service which I offer is 'Pet Photography'! A couple of years ago, a referral led me to a woman, here within our county, that raises poultry! She ended up offering the suggestion that I create a portable portrait studio and take it to 'chicken shows'!!! While laughing, I asked if she was serious! "Chicken Shows!!?? There really is such a thing!?"
OH....little did I know!
So, after giving this some thought, I talked a girlfriend into being a partner and 'giving this idea a go'!

This particular girlfriend and I are quite handy; like fixing things, building things....and really like power tools! (Turns out, we each also have an affinity for poultry!) We stood in front of her garage on a Sunday morning, with coffee in hand, looking at each other asking "Well, how do you suppose one builds a 'portable portrait studio for poultry'!?!?" "I don't know; do you know?!"
By the end of the day, and a trip to the hardware store and Wal-Mart (for fabric as backdrops), we patted ourselves on the back and agreed that it was a very creative job well done!
From that moment on, this has been a never-ending source of jokes, and laughter!! Most especially from our friends and family!
That Sunday night at dinner, this girlfriend (and her kids) joined my husband, my daughter and I for dinner. My daughter asked what the project was we were working on when she called that afternoon. When my husband overheard the answer (I had not yet told him!), he says "Wait! Wait! Now let me get this straight! You girls built a 'portrait studio' thinking people are going to bring to you their chickens so you can take pictures of them!!!???" "Oh, no, Honey! We're going to them!"
OMG!! The look on his face was priceless!!! He knew we had finally 'lost it'!!

I then had to start researching the 'Poultry Show' schedule for the upcoming show season! ( The Show season is 6 months out of a year; the other six months, these same people are breeding, hatching and raising the next 'Show Stars'!! Definitely a sub-culture, much the same as Dog Shows, Cat Shows, Horse Shows, etc.!) We signed up to be at our first show, mid-way through a season, walked in to start setting up, and began laughing wondering what we had gotten ourselves into!! For instance, our set-up is in a BIG room, with LONG rows of tables on which cages are set (there's one bird per cage); there's approx. 900-1300 birds registered for an average show........ALL of which are talking at the same time inside that one room!! All kinds of poultry, not just chickens! While at the very first show, my daughter called and I happened to not only hear my cell phone, but was not busy at the time. When I answered it, she hesitated, then spoke a touch louder as she asked "Mom? Where the heck are you!?!?" She could barely hear me because of all the talking poultry in the background! Also, at that first show, my friend and I began to really wonder "Do you think these people ever eat...chicken?!" We decided not to ever ask!

We have SOOO much fun doing this! We laugh much, really enjoy the people, and love all the gorgeous poultry! Wonderful and very entertaining way to earn some extra income!!
And we didn't leave well-enough-alone! This last season we added a new little touch to the whole idea: took a box of props with us and (without asking the owners) started taking some of the shots after 'dressing them up' or setting props next to them! Talk about laughter!! We end up with a semi-circle of laughing people, standing back around me as I'm taking the photos! (My friend sits at a table doing the computer work on our laptop!)
And BTW: since you're wondering (!), these are 'Show' birds - - THEY POSE, whether they're dressed up or not! Swear to goodness, they do! Especially the Roosters! I now understand the word "Cocky"!

The Desert Queen

One of the reasons for our desert trips is to Hunt For Treasures! Most specifically: photo ops and rocks!!
Some of these 'hunted for' rocks are brought home, and there are those specifically used just for 'Desert Art'!

Some of what we bring home are actually pretty good sized boulders! For those, it takes both of us with all our
efforts combined, to get them into the trailer! We're very selective when we're hunting; it isn't just any old rock
that gets put in the trailer to be brought back to adorn our landscapes!!
Oh No! They have to be very special to end up coming home with us!

What this really boils down to is the fact that we are just so damn easily entertained!!

P.S. LauraJohnson: I have been telling my rock-hunting buddy about SmugMug; she has been lurking in the Daily Photos. During our laughter, as we stood back to admire the new Desert Queen here, I mentioned you and how much you'd just love the sparklies! Of course, the Tiara sparkled!! But the gold strands in the boa were really pretty as they glistened in the sun, especially as they wiggled in the breeze!
